Iga ware - Japan

Pottery, also known as an unconventional aesthetic.

Iga ware is a representative pottery of Mie Prefecture, with a history dating back to the 7th century and still being produced today.
During the Momoyama period, the warrior and tea master Furuta Oribe produced bold and powerful tea ceramics for his garden, which came to be known as Ko-Iga (Old Iga).
By firing the ceramics at high temperatures without glaze, they become hard and strong, yet the natural glaze gives them a variety of expressions.
We will introduce Iga ware, often described as having an unconventional aesthetic, along with photographs of items from our collection.
