この様な形状のものを琮（そう）と言い、外形は方柱状（四角柱）で四隅には浮彫りで模様が彫刻され、長軸方向に円形の口が開いています。
長さは様々であり、瓶や壺、洗など様々な形状が作られました。
円筒形の穴は天を、方形の外周は大地を象徴し、天地の結合をシンボルとしていると言われ、琮は古代中国より玉器として供犠や葬儀などの祭祀や儀礼に使用されたとみられます。
本品は背が低く、口が窄まっていることから小壺として使われていたものと考えられます。
茶色い土に全体に灰色がかった青磁釉が掛けられ、美しい浮彫りの透けと貫入が見られます。
