唐三彩猿付馬 – Sancai Horse

馬は唐三彩でも代表的な俑の形です。
右前足を高く上げ、筋肉隆々とした後ろ足でふんばり、口を開けて力強い表情で立ちます。
顔、頸部下や腹部、腿部に黒釉が施された黒馬で、褐釉の目が光ります。
頸の線に沿って流れるようなくっきりとした鬣（たてがみ）が白釉で表現され、その合間から凛々しい褐釉の耳が現れます。
鞍韉（あんせん）や馬絡をつけて、随所に装飾をつけてとても豪華です。
特に注目すべきは鞦（しりがい）に貼花で付けられた猿の意匠です。
このような猿の意匠がつけられた三彩馬は類例を見ません。

猿は馬の守神として信仰されており、インドから中国に伝わったものと考えられています。
生活に欠かせない馬を守るこの信仰はやや形を変え日本にも厩猿信仰などとして今でも伝わります。
猿は褐釉が掛けられ、細かな毛並みや歯があり睨みを利かせたような表情です。
計６つの馬がつけられ、その上部の褐釉と緑釉の豪華な法相華の貼花で纏められています。
馬の背には下鞍の上に鞍が置かれ、脇には鐙（あぶみ）、鞍の上には毛布の鞍覆が掛かる。
下鞍の上鞍にかけては褐釉と緑釉が斑らに掛け、鞍覆は褐釉が掛けられます。
白色の馬絡をつけ、小花の紐飾が垂飾され褐釉が施されます。
尾は白く、その根本にも緑釉による装飾がされます。

Horses are a representative form of Tang sancai (Three-color Glazed) figurines.
With its right front leg raised high and its muscular hind legs bracing, the horse steps out with its mouth open and a powerful expression.
The horse’s face, lower neck, abdomen, and thighs are finished with black glaze, and its brown glaze eyes shine.
The distinct mane that flows along the line of its neck is rendered in white glaze, through which majestic brown glaze ears peek out.
The figurines are equipped with a saddle and bridle, and are adorned with decorative fittings throughout, making them extremely luxurious.
Of particular note is the monkey design attached to its rump.
A sancai horse decorated with such a monkey design is unique.

Monkeys are worshipped as guardian deities of horses, and are thought to have been introduced to China from India.
This belief in protecting horses, an essential part of life, has been passed down to Japan in a slightly modified form, and is still practiced today in the stable monkey faith.
The monkey is covered in brown glaze and has fine fur, teeth, and a glaring expression.
There are six horses attached, all of which are decorated with gorgeous brown and green Hosso flower motifs on top.
A saddle is placed on top of the lower saddle on the horse’s back, with stirrups at its sides and a blanket saddlecover draped over the saddle.
The upper saddle and lower saddle are covered in a speckled brown and green glaze, and the saddlecover is also covered in brown glaze.
The horses are wearing white bridles and are adorned with small floral cord ornaments also covered in brown glaze.
Their tails are white and decorated with green glaze.
